Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution’s

Spring Quarterly Meeting

Program

Creating a Thinking Environment® for Mediation

Successful conflict resolution always requires fresh thinking. For this reason, it is important for the mediator to create an environment in which people can do their best thinking and communicate that thinking clearly to each other. The key is providing "generative attention," a special kind of listening that enables people to access their inherent brilliance.  Come and learn how to do this.

Our very well known presenter, John Spiegel, J.D., is a divorce mediator in private practice based in Rockville, a past president and long-time member of MCDR.  Many of us also know John as being an active participant and long time member of the Divorce Roundtable of Montgomery County:  divorceroundtable.org.  John's presentation grows out of his collaboration with author and educator Nancy Kline.  Based in England, Nancy is the author of A Time To Think: Listening to Ignite the Human Mind.

MCDR is the oldest membership-based organization in Maryland dedicated to promoting the use of mediation and supporting

the mediation profession.  We have a proud history of successfully advocating for allowing multiple professions to practice mediation,

halting attempts to restrict the practice some fifteen years ago.  MCDR is the first organization to establish performance based criteria

now in use as a national model, part of an ongoing dialogue on quality assurance and mediator credentials.
