THE EVENT: 2 hour workshop, followed by luncheon and award presentation.
AWARD RECIPIENT: Robert C. Ketcham, J.D., a mediator who has demonstrated generous and unfailing energy and creative zeal in promoting mediation in Maryland.
WORKSHOP: Destabilizing the Conflict Story: Toward “Better-formed” Stories. People in dispute have their “story” of the conflict, one in which they are usually the victim and the other person is the villain. These stories simplify participants’ understanding of the issues and disable them from finding good solutions to their conflicts. This workshop offers a strategy for destabilizing conflict narratives, so that more complex, "better-formed” stories emerge on which to build sustainable agreements.
TRAINER: Dr. Sara Cobb, whose new book is: Speaking of Violence: The Politics and Poetics of Narrative in Conflict Resolution (Oxford University Press). Dr. Cobb is the Drucie French Cumbie Chair at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR) at George Mason University.

MCDR is the oldest membership-based organization in Maryland dedicated to promoting the use of mediation and supporting
the mediation profession. We have a proud history of successfully advocating for allowing multiple professions to practice mediation,
halting attempts to restrict the practice some fifteen years ago. MCDR is the first organization to establish performance based criteria
now in use as a national model, part of an ongoing dialogue on quality assurance and mediator credentials.
